The 2015 Top Scholars Awards Ceremony honoring FIU faculty took place April 27 at the Ronald W. Reagan Presidential House. Eight SISH faculty from Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, and Psychology, were recognized for their distinctive achievements by President Rosenberg.
The FIU Top Scholars Award celebrates faculty for outstanding success in their fields. Distinguished members of the academic community were honored for their dedication to excellence and for their accomplishments in research and scholarship. Honorees are nominated by their respective deans through the Office of the Provost.
Among the scientists receiving the award, Dr. William Pelham, chair of Psychology and director of the Center for Children and Families, was awarded Top Scholar for his research on medication adherence and intervention for teens with ADHD. Dr. Matthew Sutherland, assistant professor of Psychology, is studying the impact of HIV and cannabis on brain function and is affiliated with the Cognitive Neuroscience & Imaging Center.
Both Drs. Joong-ho Moon and Jin He received NSF Career and Early Career Awards for their work in Chemistry and Physics respectively, and the Biomolecular Sciences Institute. Dr. Katie Hart of Psychology and the Center for Children and Families received funding to provide small-group tutoring in Miami-Dade County schools, as well as for a Summer Treatment program for pre-Kindergarteners with behavioral, emotional, and learning challenges. And Dr. Jonathan Comer, associate professor in Psychology and the Center for Children and Families, also received funding for his groundbreaking work on internet-delivered therapy for parent-child interactions.
