Angelo Andres PhD ’17, Worlds Ahead Graduate Fall 2017

Angelo Andres PhD '17, a Worlds Ahead graduate, performed environmental assessments as a U.S. Army Reservist, then helped fight tuberculosis on deployment in Afghanistan before enrolling at FIU. His work with the Biomolecular Sciences Institute furthered his efforts against disease. Read about Angelo's service and research

Stacey Oddman, BA '94, Torch Distinguished Alumni Award 2016

Dr. Stacey Oddman BA '94 helps care for South Florida as the Chief of Family Medicine at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. She also started the Stacey Oddman CARI-STEM Scholarship to support first-generation college students of Caribbean descent in STEM fields. Superbug Stopper

Shayna Sandhaus, PhD '17, Worlds Ahead Graduate

Shayna Sandhaus PhD '17 was recognized as a Worlds Ahead Graduate for her research on antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Dr. Sandhaus' work with Biomolecular Sciences Institute Director Dr. Yuk-Ching Tse-Dinh could yield new treatments for these confounding infections. Read more about Shayna's work

Ruben Gonzalez Jr. BS '95

Dr. Ruben Gonzalez Jr. BS '95 had planned to become a high school chemistry teacher, but with the encouragement of FIU's Dr. Stephen Winkle, he became involved in RNA research and wound up as a professor at Columbia University instead. His work has contributed to breakthroughs in the imaging of RNA structure and interactions. Read about Ruben's achievements
