The National Science Foundation has awarded a total of $650,000 in the form of three grants in the field of Chemistry Education. Sonia Underwood and Justin Carmel are joint faculty members with the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and FIU's Stem TI Institute. Congratulations!!!
The NIH/NIAID has awarded our own professor Fenfei Leng with an R21 grant for a project entitled "Targeting transcription-coupled DNA supercoiling for discovering antibiotics against bacterial DNA gyrase". The R21 grant mechanism is intended to encourage exploratory/developmental research. Congratulations Dr. Leng.
The International Carotenoid Society (ICS) will this year celebrate a half century since the inception of its International Symposium on Carotenoids event, to be held 9 – 14 July in Lucerne, Switzerland. Our own Provessor Landrum is the President of the International Carotenoid Society.

A new method developed at FIU makes toxicological, biological and environmental sampling and testing cheaper, faster, and more sensitive. The new technology, which has been independently validated, promises to disrupt a multi-billion-dollar industry.

At the 2017 Florida Annual Meeting and Exposition, three Emerging Young Investigators of the American Chemical Society were highlighted: Dr. Yan-Yan Hu from FSU, Dr. Francisco Fernandez-Lima from FIU, and Dr. Eugene DePrince from FSU. These young investigators are being recognized for their early independent work, which is quickly gaining recognition in their respective fields.
